Electrostatic Precipitator Repair

Challenge

At an oil refinery in Texas, an electrostatic precipitator unit was experiencing a decrease in the rapping effectiveness and ineffective gas flow distribution due to material buildup on the plates. Also, several electrodes were broken and grounded in the unit. Because of the production schedule, bringing the unit fully offline was not an option. High heat, combined with the confined space and cooling cycle, kept maintenance crews from entering the unit due to time and safety concerns.

Technical Assessment

Simo Loreno is an approved vendor for IDLH and high heat environments with a successful history of quickly locating and removing broken electrodes and clearing plates in both the oil refining and power generation industries. The Plant manager contacted us, and we commenced planning for a precipitator repair. We mobilized our crews to the plant and immediately established control of the work area. We employed heat monitors and multi-gas (LEL, O2) and required all our crew members to wear proprietary PPE during worksite inspections. With client management we planned location of the grounds in electrostatic precipitator fields, completed a risk assessment, and made a plan for a repair in a confined space.

Solution

Simo Loreno team entered the electrostatic precipitator unit to remove ash buildup and other foreign materials from the affected plates. We replaced the insulators on the rappers and the damaged or grounded electrodes. Then we brought the electrostatic precipitator into full operation for testing to determine the total functionality of the unit.

Results

The precipitator quickly regained full operational capabilities to function as the facility intended. The client also ended regulation issues and production loss.

ID Fan Diffuser Assembly Repair

Challenge

A power plant located on the Eastern seaboard of the Australia found multiple leaks in hydraulic lines leading to their induced draught fan (ID fan) diffuser assembly. Leaks caused the ID fan assembly to fill with fluid. This caused an interruption in maintaining necessary air movement and cooling effect in the power plants emissions cleansing processes. Being a confined space along with ambient temperature kept maintenance crews from entering.

Technical Assessment

Simo Loreno crew was mobilized to the plant and  Proprietary PPE was required of Simo Loreno crew members during work site inspections. An engineered solution complete with risk assessment and confined space plan was presented to the client.

Solution

Our team entered the ID fan and removed all fluid from housing. Hydraulic system was inspected and repaired. We also rebalanced the ID fan for proper operation.

Results

All leaks inside the ID fan housing were repaired and unit was brought back into full operation after balance testing was completed. This resulted in the client saving considerable time, capital and a potential loss of power generation production. ‍

Oil Refinery Boiler Repair

Challenge

An oil refinery located in Canada was experiencing a major dilemma and facing a potential full boiler shut down because a variety of flue gas leaks on both of the two boilers used in their refining process. Due to the threat of losing both operational boilers that would have resulted in large production loss, shutting down the units was not an option. Radiant heat from boiler skin combined with confined space, noxious gas and location of leaks kept onsite maintenance crews from gaining access to complete repairs.

Technical Assessment

Simo Loreno crew was called upon and immediately Multi-gas (LEL, O2) and heat monitors were utilized. Proprietary PPE was required of all Simo Loreno crew members during work site inspections. Location and inspection of leaks, complete with risk assessment, confined space plan and repair was planned with client management.

Solution: Online CO Boiler Repair

Simo Loreno crew has extensive online boiler repair experience and spent several months onsite building scaffolding to gain access to leak locations on the boiler. We successfully repaired all leaks with approved welding procedures in confined space and immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) environments.

Results

This work scope was a success, and the client was able to continue production without any interruptions to CO boiler units or refining processes. The savings to the refinery were in the tens of millions of dollars.
